Superior Court Authorizes DCALF Employees to Provide Pro Bono Services

On August 12 the Superior Court of the District of Columbia issued Administrative Order 22-20 , authorizing DC Affordable Law Firm (DCALF) employees who are not members of the District of Columbia Bar to provide pro bono and low bono legal services in the court’s Family Court, Probate Division, and Domestic Violence Division.

Superior Court Extends Rules Emergency Through November 14

Finding that the COVID-19 pandemic continues to present extraordinary circumstances relating to public health and safety that substantially impair its ability to perform certain functions, the Superior Court of the District of Columbia issued Administrative Order 22-21 on August 16, 2022.

Superior Court Cancels Electronic Filing Deadline Extension

On August 12 the Superior Court of the District of Columbia issued Administrative Order 22-19 vacating Administrative Order 22-18, which extended certain filing deadlines in the Civil, Probate and Tax Divisions because of a planned transition to a new case management and electronic filing system on August 22.

Court of Appeals Announces Public Access Site for Certain Civil Cases

The District of Columbia Court of Appeals has announced that public access to certain cases is now available on the court’s website. Currently, access is limited to civil briefs and orders filed or entered after August 1, 2021. The ultimate goal is to provide more web-based access to additional case types in the future.

34 Firms Donate Record $7.2 Million to Raising the Bar Campaign

The D.C. Access to Justice Commission raised a record $7.2 million during its 2021 Raising the Bar in D.C. Campaign, with 34 law firms donating a portion of their D.C. office revenue toward enhancing access to civil legal services in the District.

On July 26 the District of Columbia Judicial Nomination Commission recommended D.C. Superior Court Judge Anthony C. Epstein to fill the judicial vacancy on the D.C. Court of Appeals created by the retirement of Judge Kathryn A. Oberly.

Superior Court Increases Fees for Expert Services

The Superior Court of the District of Columbia issued Administrative Order 22-15 on July 25 increasing compensation for expert services in Incarceration Reduction Amendment Act and compassionate release cases and motions from $1,600 to $2,400, with prior authorization from the assigned judge.

Superior Court Order Allows Access to Parentage Records for Study

On July 14 the Superior Court of the District of Columbia issued Administrative Order 22-12 authorizing the National Center for State Courts (NCSC) to inspect, compile, and analyze data and information from parentage records to conduct analysis for the District of Columbia Courts’ Racial Equity Project.
