Advertising Guidelines

Paid advertising allows Washington Lawyer to help offset costs to produce the magazine and introduce its readers to goods, services, and companies that might be beneficial to them. Advertisements do not represent or reflect the policies or thinking of the D.C. Board or its Board of Governors. Advertisements in Washington Lawyer may be coordinated through an external advertising agency.

The following guidelines explain how Washington Lawyer protects its journalistic integrity while working with advertisers and supporters.

  • An advertisement is content developed and paid for by a third party.

  • Washington Lawyer will not allow its strict editorial guidelines to be compromised by any relationship with an advertiser.

  • Washington Lawyer editorial staff will not create, edit, influence, or otherwise contribute to the production of paid advertising. Advertisements will be clearly distinguishable from content created by Washington Lawyer editorial staff. If necessary to make the distinction, an advertisement will be prominently marked as "Advertisement" or "Sponsored Content."

  • Advertisers are responsible for the content of their advertisements. Their advertising must comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and guidelines and must not be false or misleading.

  • Advertisements for illegal products and services and for alcohol and tobacco products are restricted, as are political endorsements.

  • Advertisements must not contain inappropriate language or disrespectful or objectionable content.

  • Washington Lawyer editorial staff has the right to request changes to an advertisement to the extent it reasonably believes necessary to comply with applicable laws.

  • Washington Lawyer can refuse, in its sole discretion, to accept any advertisement for publication, and its editorial staff may, at any time, suspend any advertisement from future publications.
