The award is presented to a lawyer for excellence, achievement, and commitment to providing legal services to the District of Columbia’s low-income and/or disadvantaged individuals and/or organizations serving such individuals.
- Nominees for the Laura N. Rinaldi Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year should have, in calendar year 2023, conducted one or more of the following activities:
- Provided legal assistance to persons of limited means through the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Center and/or another D.C. nonprofit legal services provider;
- Provided legal assistance to individuals, groups, or nonprofit organizations in the District of Columbia seeking to secure or protect civil rights, civil liberties, or public rights that helped low-income and/or disadvantaged individuals in the District;
- Provided legal assistance and/or training to District-based community nonprofits and/or small disadvantaged businesses that serve the District’s low-income communities; or
- Advanced public policy and/or court reform that favorably affected low-income and/or disadvantaged individuals in the District.
- Nominees must be members of the D.C. Bar.
- Individual attorneys who obtain most of their income from delivering or coordinating the delivery of pro bono legal services are not eligible for this award.
- The Bar reserves the right not to give an award in any given year.
