Superior Court Approves Amendments to Probate Division Rules

On March 4 the Superior Court of the District of Columbia issued Promulgation Order 22-03 approving amendments to the Superior Court Rules of the Probate Division. The rules have been completely reorganized and renumbered, so the court has not provided a marked-up version. These rules do not modify the Federal Rules of Civil or Criminal Procedure. The amendments take effect on August 22, 2022.

UDC Law Wins 2022 D.C. Cup Moot Court Competition

For the second year in a row, the competition was held virtually by the D.C. Bar Communities due to the pandemic. In the three-round competition, teams from the District’s six law schools argue a case before volunteer judges, honing both their oral advocacy and brief-writing skills.

Superior Court Welcomes Five New Associate Judges

On February 28, Judges Kenia Seoane López, Rupa Puttagunta, Ebony M. Scott, Sean C. Staples, and Donald Walker Tunnage became the newest members of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. Chief Judge Anita Josey-Herring, who administered the oath, said she was thrilled with the five additions to the court, which has been dealing with vacancies for years.

D.C. Courts to Operate Under Emergency Schedule

Due to scheduled protests downtown, the D.C. Courts will operate on an emergency schedule from March 1 through March 4. All remote oral arguments in the D.C. Court of Appeals and remote hearings in D.C. Superior Court will proceed at their originally scheduled time. Criminal trials currently in progress in Superior Court will proceed but may be suspended on short notice.

The D.C. Commission on Judicial Disabilities and Tenure is reviewing the qualifications and fitness of D.C. Superior Court Judge Judith A. Smith, who is seeking initial appointment as senior judge on the Superior Court following her retirement.
