JNC Recommends Judge Epstein for Court of Appeals Vacancy

July 28, 2022

On July 26 the District of Columbia Judicial Nomination Commission recommended D.C. Superior Court Judge Anthony C. Epstein to fill the judicial vacancy on the D.C. Court of Appeals created by the retirement of Judge Kathryn A. Oberly.

The commission recommended Epstein, along with any other candidates previously submitted for President Joe Biden’s consideration, after the president withdrew the nomination of Tovah R. Calderon at her request.

An associate judge on the Superior Court since 2008, Epstein is currently presiding judge of the Civil Division and previously served in the Criminal Division and the Family Court. Judge Epstein is currently a member of the Advisory Committee on Judicial Conduct for the District of Columbia Courts and serves on the Superior Court Rules Committee and the Civil Rules Advisory Committee. He served on the D.C. Courts’ Committee on Unauthorized Practice of Law from 1998 to 2008.

Before his appointment to Superior Court, Epstein was in private practice at Steptoe & Johnson LLP and Jenner & Block LLP. He began his legal career with the U.S. Department of Justice.
