Pro Bono Center Operations Update: COVID-19

Effective March 16, due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, all D.C. Bar Pro Bono Center staff are working remotely and are available via phone and email to provide free legal assistance. Service changes for specific programs are listed below:

Individuals seeking legal assistance during the COVID-19 restrictions can find up-to-date information about D.C. legal services providers on the LawHelp coronavirus page. People seeking legal help should continue to access LawHelp. The Pro Bono Center’s Legal Information Help Line at 202-626-3499 operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, providing information on legal topics in Spanish, Amharic and French, in addition to English.

Landlord Tenant Resource Center (LTRC)

LTRC provides free legal information to both unrepresented tenants and small landlords who have residential housing disputes in the District of Columbia. While the court-based Landlord Tenant Resource Center is closed until January 11, tenants or small landlords seeking legal information can call 202-780-2575 for help.

Consumer Law Resource Center (CLRC)

CLRC provides information regarding small claims cases, debt collection, rent deposit recovery, and other consumer matters. The court-based Consumer Law Resource Center is closed until Wednesday, January 13, but those with an emergency in a consumer case, such as the attachment of your bank account, who are not able to submit the emergency papers electronically should call 202-780-2574.

Family Law Assistance Network (FLAN)

FLAN offers individuals confidential, free legal advice or representation in custody, child support, parentage, and divorce cases. Individuals with questions about D.C. family law cases or who need help filing a pleading with the Domestic Relations Branch can speak with an attorney from one of the three participating organizations (D.C. Bar Pro Bono Center, D.C. Affordable Law Firm, and the Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia) by calling 202-844-5428.

Advice & Referral Clinic

The October Advice & Referral Clinic will be held remotely. Those in need of legal assistance can reach the Clinic by calling 202-737-4700 (ext. 3294) from October 2 through October 8.

All upcoming, in-person Advice & Referral Clinics have been canceled in both Shaw and Anacostia through January 2021.

Nonprofit & Small Business Legal Assistance Programs (NPSB)

NPSB continues to match nonprofits with on-going pro bono counsel and operate its nonprofit and small business brief advice legal clinics. Law firm pro bono coordinators can contact [email protected] if they have attorneys seeking pro bono opportunities. Nonprofits and small businesses seeking updates during the COVID-19 restrictions can find up-to-date information here: COVID-19 Legal Resources for Nonprofits & Small Businesses.
