Temporary Panel of Retired CJA Attorneys Appointed as Counsel for Grand Jury Appearances

On September 11 the Superior Court of the District of Columbia issued Administrative Order 24-13, appointing a temporary panel of retired Criminal Justice Act (CJA) attorneys to represent witnesses called to appear before the grand jury.

These six attorneys, who will be compensated at the current hourly CJA rate, are limited in their representation of the witnesses to the grand jury appearance.

The order takes effect immediately.

D.C. Courts Seek Input on Limited Legal Services Providers

To help ease the gap in access to justice, the D.C. Courts’ Civil Legal Regulatory Reform Task Force is investigating a new approach — allowing people who are not lawyers, but who have sufficient qualifications and training, to provide limited legal services in certain areas of the law where there are high rates of pro se litigants (such as family, housing, consumer, and probate law).
