The D.C. Judicial Nomination Commission is inviting comments from the bench, bar, and public regarding the qualifications of 19 candidates for pending vacancies on the D.C. Superior Court created by the retirement of Judges Peter A. Krauthamer and Hiram E. Puig-Lugo.

Bar Board of Governors is seeking candidates for appointment in the fall to the following standing committees: Clients’ Security Fund, Communities, Continuing Legal Education, Global Legal Practice, Judicial Evaluation, Lawyer Assistance, Leadership Development, Pro Bono, and Regulations/Rules/Board Procedures.

Superior Court Amends Landlord and Tenant Branch Rules

On May 15 the Superior Court of the District of Columbia issued Promulgation Order 23-02 amending Rules 3, 3-I, 3-II, 4, 6, 7, 10, 11, 13, 13-I, 14-I, 14-II, and 16 of the Superior Court Rules of Procedure for the Landlord and Tenant Branch, effective immediately.

Family and friends of the late George Washington Jones Jr. will gather at Hines-Rinaldi Funeral Home on May 13 to celebrate his life and legacy as a lawyer, advocate, and family man. Jones was a valuable member of the D.C. Bar with a long history of service, including as general counsel, member of its Legal Ethics Committee, member of the Board of Governors, and, finally, president of the Bar.

D.C. Courts Are Strong, But Justice Advocates Push for D.C. Autonomy

The D.C. Court of Appeals closed more than 1,100 cases in 2021 and 2022 and reduced the median time on appeal in both years. The court still has one judicial vacancy, which has existed for 10 years. Meanwhile, in 2022 D.C. Superior Court disposed of more than 15,000 cases in the Civil Division, approximately 8,000 in the Domestic Violence Division, 9,329 in Family Court, 2,811 in the Probate Division — a 15 percent increase from 2021 — and nearly 10,000 in the Criminal Division.

Superior Court Seeks Applicants for Soon-to-Be Reestablished CJA Panel

D.C. Superior Court is reestablishing its Criminal Justice Act Panel in 2024. Attorneys who are members of the District of Columbia Bar and are committed to providing quality representation to indigent persons with matters in the court’s Criminal Division and Domestic Violence Division may apply.
