Superior Court Updates Criminal Justice Act Panel

On November 23 the Superior Court of the District of Columbia issued Administrative Order 21-16, regarding extension of and additions to its Criminal Justice Act (CJA) Panel of attorneys. Unless suspended or removed, the provisional and full members are appointed until the date of reestablishment of the CJA Panel, which has been deferred past May 2022. The Committee on Criminal Justice Act Panel Attorneys will provide six months’ notice prior to the date applications are due for reappointment as a full panel member or for extension of provisional status.

Court of Appeals Specifies When a Flat Fee Is Earned

In re Alexei, decided August 1, 2024, by the D.C. Court of Appeals, holds that absent an agreement specifying to the contrary, an attorney earns a flat-fee payment only upon completion of all enlisted services. The court announced its interpretation of Rule 1.15 of the D.C. Rules of Professional Conduct for the first time, clarifying an issue previously addressed in In re Mance. Superior Court Welcomes Two New Magistrate Judges

Chief Judge Anita Josey-Herring swore in two new magistrate judges, Meti Abebe and David Richter, on August 12 inside her chambers at the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.
