Superior Court Ends Period for Suspension, Tolling, and Extension of Deadlines

June 10, 2022

By Susannah Buell

On June 10 the Superior Court of the District of Columbia issued an order ending the period during which deadlines were suspended, tolled, and extended for all statutory and rules-based time limits in the D.C. Code and D.C. Superior Court Rules.

In the Criminal Division, effective September 6, the court will cease tolling the nine-month indictment timeline in nondetained cases. Effective July 18, the court’s Drug Intervention Program (Drug Court) and Mental Health Community Court will return to in-person hearings. However, the judge may permit some remote appearances when appropriate.

In Family Court, deadlines for statutory and rules-based time limits will go into full force and effect after 9 a.m. on June 27 for matters involving juvenile delinquency, persons in need of supervision, and private adoption cases; all Domestic Relations Branch cases; and all paternity and support cases. For mental health cases, deadlines and time limits will go into full force and effect after 9 a.m. on July 11.

Starting August 1, the Superior Court will conduct operations consistent with the soon-to-be-released plan for reimagining the court post-emergency due to the pandemic.
