Comment on Candidates for Magistrate Judge Appointment

The D.C. Superior Court Committee on the Selection and Tenure of Magistrate Judges invites comments from the bench, bar, and public regarding the fitness of 28 candidates to fill three pending magistrate judge vacancies on Superior Court. The committee will submit the names of three applicants for each vacancy to the chief judge of Superior Court. In addition, the Advisory Merit Selection Panel, comprising attorneys and community members, will review the candidates and make recommendations to the chief judge and the committee.  

Comments submitted to the committee are confidential. Please send all comments to Chair Judge Michael O’Keefe at [email protected] and Natalia Wilson at [email protected] by July 20. Questions should be directed to Judge O’Keefe.

Court of Appeals Specifies When a Flat Fee Is Earned

In re Alexei, decided August 1, 2024, by the D.C. Court of Appeals, holds that absent an agreement specifying to the contrary, an attorney earns a flat-fee payment only upon completion of all enlisted services. The court announced its interpretation of Rule 1.15 of the D.C. Rules of Professional Conduct for the first time, clarifying an issue previously addressed in In re Mance. Superior Court Welcomes Two New Magistrate Judges
