Docket No. 22-BD-024

Decisions

DCCA Opinion (January 2, 2025)

Summary: In re Matthew A. LeFande. Bar No. 475995. January 2, 2025. The D.C. Court of Appeals found that LeFande committed seven violations of the D.C. and Maryland Rules of Professional Conduct as a result of conduct in two client matters and disbarred him. In the first matter, LeFande represented two clients who refused to return a large sum of money they mistakenly received during a real estate transaction. Over the course of six years, LeFande made numerous frivolous and improper filings in the matter and was ultimately found guilty of criminal contempt for refusing a court order to take the stand for a deposition. In the second matter, LeFande made multiple frivolous filings and arguments in a bankruptcy proceeding. The court found that LeFande’s conduct violated D.C. Rules 3.1 (frivolous arguments), 3.4(c) (knowingly disobeying rules of a tribunal), and 8.4(d) (serious interference with the administration of justice), and Maryland Rules 19-303.1 (frivolous arguments), 19-303.3(a)(1) (knowingly false statements to a tribunal), 19308.4(c) (dishonesty, fraud, deceit, or misrepresentation), and 19-308.4(d) (conduct prejudicial to the administration of justice).
