Decisions

DCCA Order (August 17, 2017)

Summary: The D.C. Court of Appeals disbarred Grigsby for engaging in intentional misappropriation.

DCCA Order (December 27, 2016)

Summary: Grigsby was suspended on an interim basis pursuant to D.C. Bar R. XI, § 9(g), pending final action on the Board on Professional Responsibility’s November 14, 2016, recommendation of disbarment.

Board Report and Orders (November 14, 2016)

Summary: The Board on Professional Responsibility recommends that the D.C. Court of Appeals disbar Grigsby in connection with four separate complaints. In the first matter, Grigsby represented a defendant in a divorce action in the Commonwealth of Virginia. In the second matter, Grigsby represented a client after the client was convicted in a criminal proceeding (which was affirmed on appeal), and Grigsby was paid by the client’s mother for the purpose of obtaining various types of possible post-appeal relief for the client. In the third matter, Grigsby was retained principally to collect a $3,400 debt and recover possession of an automobile from an individual, to obtain a “stay-away” order against that individual, and to resolve a discrepancy in the birth certificate of the client’s deceased father so that the client could collect the proceeds of insurance on his father’s life. In the fourth matter, Grigsby filed suit on behalf of the client in the Landlord and Tenant Branch of the District of Columbia Superior Court for possession and nonpayment of rent regarding certain rental premises in the District. Specifically, the Board found in one of the matters that the mother of the client provided $2,000 to Grigsby as a partial payment toward a $3,000 flat fee. These funds were to be held in trust until earned. Grigsby transferred the funds from his escrow account to his operating account before he earned them, and thus engaged in misappropriation. The Board Report stated, for this and other reasons set forth in the Hearing Committee’s Report and Recommendation, the Board recommends that Grigsby be disbarred. Rules 1.1(a), 1.1(b), 1.3(a), 1.3(b)(1), 1.3(c), 1.4(a), 1.4(b), 1.5(a), 1.5(b), 1.15(a) and (e), 1.16(d), 3.4(c), 5.5(a), 8.4(c), and 8.4(d), and D.C. Bar Rule XI, § 2(b).
